A day after Bangalore Metro officials changed the rules to allow students from across disciplines to participate in designing two stations, the number of applicants rose from a mere 15 to 180.

Several students from across the state visited the MG Road and Swami Vivekananda Road Metro stations recently to participate in the Ideas Design competition. The contestants were taken around the metro stations and were explained by the BMRCL engineers of each floor. They were shown the walls and the spaces they have to design on each floor. A majority of those vying for the Rs 1 lakh prize said they would incorporate light colours in their design.

There are two lifts at the Metro station exclusively for handicapped persons, senior citizens and patients. They have plans to have space exclusively for a reading area on the second floor.

However, the BMRCL doesn't have any plans for coffee or snacks shops on the premises. There is still a lot of work to be done, which will take a minimum of two months for completion There were individual contestants and also in groups to take part in the competition.

"The ambience is very nice, as the entrance will have light blue tinted glasses with two doors. We prefer mild colours, as there is a lot of glass everywhere. The MG Road station is in the shape of a bird.

We have decided the theme, and now working on how best to present it," said Preethi KN, a BMS College student. Students from Jain College had come in a group. "We have a chance to show our creativity, since it's a unique experience. We would like to thank the BMRCL for giving us an opportunity."
