The injured helper was identified as Rekha Sopan Pandey (45). Officials of the Dehu Road police station said the incident took place around 7 am, after the bus had picked up students from Chikhali. Bus driver Yuvraj Mhaske stated before the police that when he reached Sharad Nagar the brakes of the bus failed and to control the bus he had to hit the stationary bus from behind.

The front portion of the school bus was damaged and the students sitting in the front row injured. Some even sustained injuries on the head and one student’s hand was fractured. The helper, Rekha, sustained injuries on the neck and thigh, and doctors suspect she might have a fracture.

Passers-by rushed the injured to a nearby hospital. It was learnt that after the students were admitted to hospital, bus driver Mhaske drove the vehicle to Hargudevasti and covered the damaged portion with a tarpaulin. School president Gururaj Chartimath said the bus had been hired by parents.

“Some parents have hired the bus on their own,” Chartimath said. “The school has authorised only four buses and eight autorickshaws to ferry children. The affected bus does not belong to us.”u00a0
