Twenty students from Std XI and XII of the Maharashtra State Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology in Model Colony, are busy getting egg on their faces and flour in their hair, all in a bid to enter the Limca Book of Records with a corn-shaped cake through its bakery department tomorrow.

The recipe includes 1,500 eggs, 50 kg sugar, 50 kg white flour, 10 kg icing sugar, 10 kg cashew powder, 20 cans of pineapple and 20 cans of cherries. The cake will be 25-feet long, 5.5 feet wide and 3 feet high. Each year, in the first week of the New Year, the college arranges an alumni meet and welcomes students of earlier batches with a sweet cake. This year around, the college has invited students of the 1988 batch and preparations are on in full swing to get the welcome cake ready.

“Today we have started pre-preparations for the cake. The team is making the sponge cake as base. As it is a perishable product, the actual task will be done on January 5, which is the day of the alumni meet,” said Dharmanath Gaikwad, HoD of the bakery department.

“A three-member team of executive chefs will be coming to review the cake on Saturday. We have already intimated officials of Limca Book of Records regarding the specifications and ingredients that we will use,” Sanee Awasarmmel, chairperson of Maharashtra State Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology Alumni Association, said. u00a0

The Maharashtra State Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology had successfully attempted to enter the Limca Book of Records twice before. The first attempt was in 2002, when the college prepared the largest pizza and secured its place in the record book. In 2009, the college prepared 15-feet tall croquembouche, a French desert, under the guidance of A K Pushgaokar, the then HoD of the bakery department.u00a0
