First national seminar on counter-terrorism will have top counter terrorism, insurgency agencies to share their success stories with the state cops


In what can provide an immense learning opportunity for the senior police officials from across the state, they'll have a firsthand experience of success stories against terror strikes by the members of Gray Hounds and Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare (CIJWS). A daylong seminar on counter terrorism is being held at Sahyadri State Guest House at Malabar Hill today. According to the government sources, the purpose of the seminar is to take stock of preparedness of the state police, and learn from the success stories in the field.

Hosted by Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) and the State police, the seminar is probably the first-of-its kind. While Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan will be inaugurating the seminar, retired DGP of Punjab, KPS Gill, would be delivering the keynote speech. Besides Chavan and Gill, Home Minister R R Patil and his deputy, Satej Patil would be attending the event.

The sessions
Coinciding with the foundation day of Force One, the elite force created by the state on the lines of National Security Guards (NSG), the seminar will have eminent speakers from the Central security agencies dealing with counter terrorism activities, said sources from the Democratic Front government. In addition, Director General of NSG will chair one of the sessions on national counter terrorism infrastructure with one of his colleagues as a key speaker.

V Balachandran, a retired IPS officer, who was associated with intelligence wing of the city police during the '70s would be chairing a presentation of success stories of Gray Hounds, the special force established to tackle Naxalism in 1989 and CIJWS, a prestigious army training institute in field of counter insurgency and jungle warfare since 1970. He is also expected to deliver international perspective on counter terrorism.

Meanwhile, Director General of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) will be hosting a session on building successful counter terrorist units.
