Aditi:
Why are we even arguing? It's plain and simple: Superman's cooler that's why his debut comic -- the Holy Grail of comic books -- fetched as much as it did. Superman just beat Batman hollow.
Sowmya: That's probably because the buyers were looking up at the sky to figure if it was a weird-looking bird or an embarrassingly loud aeroplane and missed Batman at the wheels of the drool-worthy Batmobile, the meanest, boldest, most stylish gizmo to swoosh along on wheels, which, FYI, he had a hand in building.

Aditi: Superman does not need a vehicle; he can simply fly between galaxies without having to stop to catch his breath. Plus with his superhuman speed, he'd win a race even before Batman could get the Batmobile started.
Sowmya: Sure he can, because he happened to be born on Krypton, where gravity was a lot stronger than here on Earth. So he decided to show off his prowess here on Earth, where flying is the preserve of birds.
Batman, on the other hand, is a masked vigilante who didn't have to take on this alter ego to fight evil and put his own life at risk. He's a real hero, not a pumped-up blue and red horror of an alien

Aditi: Superman is who he is. He does not need to become someone else to fight crime. Quentin Tarantino has the best answer for this argument: "Superman didn't become Superman. Superman was born Superman... His alter ego is Clark Kent. His outfit with the big red 'S', that's the blanket he was wrapped in as a baby when the Kents found him. Those are his clothes. What Kent wears -- the glasses, the business suit -- that's the costume. That's the costume Superman wears to blend in with us. Clark Kent is how Superman views us. And what are the characteristics of Clark Kent? He's weak, he's unsure of himself, he's a coward. Clark Kent is Superman's critique on the whole human race."
And in any case if it came to a head to head fight, Superman would totally kick Batman's butt. Even his lame powers like Freeze Breath and Super Memory are enough for Batman. Let's not even talk about Super Speed or Heat Vision.
Sowmya: Umm, have you taken a look at Batman's gadgets, and his ability to use his brain to outwit opponents? In case you haven't noticed, Superman's brawn is all he's got -- they probably didn't make any grey cells up on Krypton.

Aditi: Look, Superman's not called The Man of Steel for nothing. He could just pow-wow Batman and he'd go whimpering back to Alfred. There's just no competition here.
Sowmya: Precisely. The man of steel is a one-dimensional cardboard cut-out, with bulging biceps, a weakness when faced with Kryptonite, and a terrible hairstyle that leaves him looking like an outdated Mills and Boon hero. Batman is dark, real, and terribly sexy because he's a hunk with a heart that strives to make this world a better place. Superman doesn't inspire any empathy when he faints if he looks at Kryptonite (what's that all about!) but you understand Batman's pain when the very people he fought to save turn their backs on him and treat him like a criminal.

Aditi: It's the villains in the Batman series that make him look cool. Everybody remembers Joker (both Jim Carrey and Heath Ledger) and Mr Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger) more than Batman. And Superman has his own angst to deal with alright! You can't even imagine how lonely it can get for someone who has lost his home world. It's just that his life experiences have made him more protective of Earth. It's only because a comic book editor decided to ban him from ever killing that Superman seems weak. But that also makes him a great role model for kids.
Sowmya: No way! He looks like a blindingly multi-coloured bubble gum candy wrapper that people didn't buy because they couldn't bear for their eyes to hurt so much everytime they looked at it. Batman's got style and verve in that classy black and grey ensemble he's got going on. Not to mention that mask which is a much better disguise than the lane spectacles Superman puts on to turn into Clark Kent. How dumb are the people of Metropolis? Oh, on second thought, maybe that's why he's such a hero there. A case of being the best among losers?

Aditi: Batman's costume is BORING. And our Fashion Editor, Shweta Shiware, supports me on this. "The pop colours from Superman's costume are all the rage this season," she says. And I rest my case on the costume debate. In any case if Batman is all that cool as you make him out to be why does he need a sidekick as pansy as Robin.
Sowmya: If he was so cool, why did he need Super Girl and Super Boy, who were both so painful to watch that they had to be discontinued?
