Supriya Sule leaves Shindewadi without meeting victim's kin

Baramati MP Supriya Sule yesterday visited the spot where 14-month-old Sanskruti Wadekar and her mother Vishakha were swept away by rainwater gushing down the hills near the new Katraj Tunnel on June 6. She, however, avoided meeting the victim’s family and made her way to the Zilla Parishad’s schools in Khadakwasla, and later proceeded to Bhor to campaign for her party for the June 23 municipal council polls.

Sule, after arriving in the city, visited the Shindewadi village where the tragedy occurred. She spent an hour listening to the villagers’ grievances who complained about the surge in traffic movement and the problems faced due to the illegal encroachments in the area.

“Shindewadi locals registered their dissatisfaction over the traffic problems they have to encounter on a daily basis due to the increasing encroachment along the NH-4,” said Bhalchandra Jagtap, NCP president from Bhor taluka.

It was expected that since it was Sule’s first visit to the city after the tragic incident, she would most likely meet the victim’s family to provide them emotional support and assure strict action against the culprits. The expectations of the Wadekar family, however, were ruined after Sule did not pay them a visit.

“No one except, NCP city chief Vandana Chavan and BJP leader Vinod Tawade, even enquired about the difficulties that I am facing due to the loss of my daughter and wife,” said Sachin Wadekar, father of 14-month-old Sanskruti Wadekar, whose body was found on June 12, five days after she swept away in the flash flood. Her mother’s body was found on the next day of the incident.

“How can I expect politicians to come and console me? They didn’t utter a single word when the district administration and the National Highway Authority of India officials turned a blind eye to the unauthorised constructions that run along the NH-4,” said Wadekar, who runs a small battery repair shop at Aundh.

Meanwhile, it is reported that Sule, on Thursday, is scheduled to meet with the District Collector Vikas Deshmukh, NHAI officials and district administrative officers of Satara district. She is expected to query them on the illegal encroachments in the rural part of the Pune and Satara districts.

Despite repeated attempts, Sule did not respond to this reporter’s calls. However, her close aide Rashmi Kamtekar told MiD DAY that her schedule for yesterday was pre-planned with visits to Zilla Parishad schools in Khadakwasla and campaigning in Bhor.

Hence, she didn’t get the time to meet the victim’s family. “However, Sule would like to meet the affected family,” said Kamtekar

While speaking to mediapersons at Shindewadi, Sule said that an RTI query should be filed to find out who has illegally constructed structures along the NH-4 highway and on the hills in Shindewadi.

She also said the district collectorate shouldn’t hesitate in taking strict action against any political leader’s illegal construction at Khed Shivapur or Shindewadi.u00a0
