Janam's Char Rang takes a fresh look at the Novel Chaturang
Almost a century later, Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore's works still inspire theatrewallas around the country. 
In October, director Sunil Shanbag premiered his play Walking To The Sun, based on Tagore's Dak Ghar. Now, at the ongoing theatre festival Sarkash, Delhi-based theatre group Janam presents Char Rang, a reinterpretation of Chaturang.
"Chaturang is a short, terse, underwritten text, which has a contemporary resonance," explains Sudhanva Deshpande, director of the play. Janam, a socially engaged group that is well known for their street plays, picked up the short novel for two reasons -- the women characters presented in the text and Tagore's take on religiosity. "The women in Chaturang refuse (not rebel against) society's shackles. Also, in the novel, Tagore subtly uses rationality to tackle so-called swamis, gurus and their take on religion," says Deshpande.
