Voicing concern over the increasing cases of atrocities on women and children, Maharashtra Legislative Council Deputy Chairman Manikrao Thakre said the government will be asked to take stern measures to curb such incidents.

"Cases of rape and atrocities have increased in the recent past. There are laws in place to punish criminals but at the same time, state government should take stringent measures to prevent such cases," Thakre said here yesterday, adding he would instruct the government to act in this direction.

Thakre was replying to a query of reporters about the rising number of crimes against children and women in the city in the wake of fresh incidents of rape of a 2-year-old girl in Mumbai and a 20-year-old girl in Nalasopara here.

When asked about differences within the Congress in the city, Thakre said such things are bound to happen within any party and it would be sorted out in due course of time.

To another query that are some party leaders were unhappy and are planning to quit Congress, he said dedicated workers and leaders will never leave the party.
