MCD inspector demands bribe from Dehi-based transporter, lands in ACB net

Himmat Singh says he is a law-abiding citizen. He pays his taxes on time and steers clear of trouble. But on Monday he was the bait in an elaborate sting operation by the Anti-Corruption Bureau. And the big fish was caught hook, line and sinker.

The ACB nabbed MCD's Assistant Zonal Inspector Kishan Singh Negi, who was allegedly demanding Rs 25,000 as bribe from Himmat Singh for clearing the files regarding the receipt of his house tax, which he had already paid.

According to the Anti Corruption Branch officials, the complainant had approached the ACB alleging that Negi and a few other MCD officials were harassing him.

"I had already paid the tax through an online account. I also have the receipts, but they kept blackmailing me. During the month of March they made calls to me and then threatened to seal my building if I did not pay them a bribe of Rs. 25,000. They have not updated their website. I had paid more than the amount that I had to pay as house tax," said Himmat Singh.

The ACB officials laid a trap and sent Singh with the first instalment of Rs. 5000 from the Rs. 25,000 demanded by Negi.

"The authorities did not update their records and then the accused was harassing him. After laying a trap we arrested Negi red-handed while he was accepting the bribe. A case has been registered against him and we are probing the matter," said I D Shukla, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Anti Corruption Bureau.
