Currently, autorickshaws and radio cabs provide services to passengers in the city.

"Just like autos, you will find taxis running on the city roads soon. The government has decided to introduce taxis in the city. The service will be launched soon as we have already formulated the rules and regulations for the same," Gujarat Road Transport Minister Vijay Rupani said here.
Ahmedabad is rapidly growing and it is necessary to provide another mode of transport in addition to autos and buses, he said.
"Ahmedabad is a large city. Taxis are already running in other big cities like Mumbai and Delhi. Therefore, we felt that such a service should be introduced here as well. These taxis will charge a minimum fare of Rs 20 (for the first kilometer) and Rs 12 for every subsequent kilometer," Rupani said.
In the wake of the alleged rape of a 27-year-old woman executive in Delhi by a driver of an app-based taxi service operator, Gujarat government had announced several rules and regulations for these cab operators in the state recently.
According to Rupani, such rules will be applicable to these drivers of these regular taxis as well.
"It will be compulsory to install GPS in all the taxis, so that we can track their movement and respond quickly in case of an emergency. Apart from registration with RTO, drivers need to undergo police verification before acquiring permit from us. They are also required to wear a specific uniform," said Rupani.
