Atrocities against women and girls shows no signs of abating and in another shocking incident, a 47-year-old teacher was arrested by officials of the Narayangaon police station for allegedly raping his 12-year-old domestic help yesterday evening.
The suspect has been identified as Dipakraj Shastri Maharaj, a resident of Warulwadi in Junnar taluka. Maharaj hails from Ahmadnagar district and teaches at a secondary school.
Police Inspector Shankarrao Awtade, in-charge of Narayangaon police station, said that the suspect has been teaching Sanskrit to students of Std VIII to X since 1995. He lived in Bhalgat Apartment with a woman, whom he says is like a sister.
A year ago, Maharaj and his sister approached a man in Sinnar taluka, who has five daughters, and asked him to send them one daughter. He promised to pay for the girl’s education and to look after her.
According to what the police have learned, the woman he claims is his sister parted ways over a dispute. The victim’s father used to visit Maharaj’s home to meet his daughter, and when he learnt that she was being treated a domestic help he confronted the suspect.
However, Maharaj managed to pacify the victim’s father and promised to enrol the girl at a school. “On Sunday, the suspect allegedly raped the girl after severely beating her. The girl narrated the incident to a shopkeeper in the area, after which her father was informed,” said Awtade.
The victim’s father lodged a complaint yesterday evening, after which the suspect was arrested. Meanwhile, news of the incident spread like wildfire and people held protest and damaged Maharaj’s vehicle. The parents of the victim, students of various schools and members of political parties plan to hold a silent protest in Narayangaon today.
