In a case shrouded in mystery, a partly decomposed body of a 16-year-old babysitter was found on the porch covering on the first floor of the plush high-rise Oberoi Splendor at JVLR in Andheri (East) last morning.

Murder

The police suspect the girl, Himani Das, belonging to Assam, may have committed suicide by jumping from the 20th floor of the high-rise. She was employed as a full-time babysitter for a couple’s seven-year-old daughter. Das was known to be unhappy in Mumbai and she wanted to go back to her native place. She went missing on the morning of February 13 and the police suspect that she jumped to her death on the same day.

Das was brought to Mumbai on February 3 by a middleman and was hired by a couple residing in Oberoi Splendor. The couple work for a private company and would be out the whole day. However, Das was not able to adjust to the city and was desperate to leave and return to Assam. According to the Meghwadi police, Das went to the neighbours on February 11 and called her father in Assam, asking him to get her back.

Das even tried to run away the next day but she was stopped at the gate by security guards. The guards informed her employer who asked them to stop her, as she was new to the place and would eventually get lost. Her father in Assam was informed and asked to come the very next day.

The next day, Das got upset when her father didn’t come. She went out on the pretext of running some errands in the afternoon and did not return. When she didn’t return after some time, they searched several places and finally lodged a missing complaint at the Meghwadi police station.

Last morning, a resident of the fifth floor spotted Das’ body lying on the porch covering on the first floor. He immediately informed the guards and the police. The fire brigade was called and the body was sent for a post-mortem. The covering can only be seen from the top.

“We suspect Das jumped from the 20th floor. On primary investigations, we suspect it to be a case of suicide. However we are investigating all angles,” a senior police officer from Meghwadi police station said. An accidental death report (ADR) has been registered and further investigations are on.u00a0
