Multi-crore fake stamp paper racket kingpin Abdul Karim Telgi finally tasted freedom after being imprisoned for a decade. The High Court yesterday granted conditional bail on the basis of health grounds and his bail petition was heard by Justice V Jagannathan.

Accordingly, Telgi is required to submit a bond of Rs 2 lakh and has been directed to appear before the CBI every month. He was also directed by the court to surrender his passport while he is on bail.

During the hearing counsel for Telgi M T Nanaiah stated that the petitioner is suffering from over 14 serious aliments and the care being extended to him in prison is inadequate.

Using the example of a 40-year-old prisoner succumbing recently as a result of gangrene in the Bangalore Central Prison, Nanaiah said that his client should be allowed to live with his wife and children at least during the latter part of his days.

"He has completed nine years and nine months in prison. People involved in similar cases have already been released. This court cannot discriminate between Telgi and others," he said.

When the counsel for the prosecution submitted that Telgi is kingpin of a multicrore scam, which has resulted in a phenomenal loss to the exchequer, the defense said that this allegation has been against him since past decade, but there has been no recovery of money, stamp paper or machinery from him.

Speaking to MiD DAY, Nanaiah expressed hope that he would get desired outcome. "If all goes well, Telgi will
celebrate Eid with his family after almost a decade", he said.
