Temerity wins Gaekwad Trophy in style

Temerity, the three-year-old, got abroad filly by Intense Focus out of Narmina, outclassed her two rivals to win the Maharaja Sir Pratapsingh Gaekwad Trophy, the prime event of the first evening racing card held at Mahalaxmi racecourse yesterday. Temerity was trained by Pesi Shroff and ridden by Neeraj Rawal.

Allowing Sky Mine to set the pace, Temerity stalked her from a respectful distance until turning for home, before cruising on tight reins to get level. A little nudge from Neeraj Rawal thereafter was all that she required to sail away for a comfortable victory, sparing three-and-a-quarter lengths to Set To Fly (TS Jodha up) who managed to put his neck ahead of Sky Mine (Trevor up) at the wire after a brief struggle in the final furlong.

Most impressive
Lucas from trainer Ms Nazak Chenoy's yard was the most impressive winner of the evening when, in the hands of jockey Y S Srinath, he simply bounded away from the two-furlong post to pulverize the opposition in the Grand Passion Plate for class IV horses. His hapless victims also included the favourite, Zinfandelle (Trevor up), who failed to even finish on the board.

Sandesh excels
The J V Shukla-Ashwamitra Trophy was won by Artistic trained by Cooji Katrak. A keen fight was expected in this race between Artistic and Sparkling Eyes, but the latter, ridden by Srinath, threw in the towel after struggling to quicken, even as jockey Sandesh did some smart balancing act to steady a drifting Artistic to finally win unchallenged. Sandesh was the star professional of the Thursday card with a superb treble, whereas YS Srinath scored a double when, after Lucas, he steered Jeena to victory in the last race. Cooji Katrak was the sole trainer to score more than once on the card, with Pugnacious and Artistic.
