Thane builder's suicide: Witnesses nail four corporators

In their statements, three witnesses told investigating officers that builder Suraj Parmar would often open up about the harassment he was subjected to by the Thane corporators named in his suicide note

A scrutiny of the 3,050-page chargesheet (copy available with mid-day), submitted by the Kasarvadavli police in the Thane Sessions Court on February 2, has revealed that investigating officers recorded statements of a few witnesses who have accused the four TMC corporators of harassing builder Parmar to such an extent that he decided to commit suicide.

First witness
Name: Vallabh Ramji Majethia (70)
Profession: Businessman, astrologer and trustee of Jai Aambe Maa Sarvajanik Vishvasth Sanstha
In his statement, Majethia said Parmar would visit Hanuman and Jain mandir at Tembli Naka every Saturday before meeting him. “For the last one year, Suraj had been telling me that four corporators — Najeeb Mulla, Sudhakar Chavan, Vikrant Chavan, and Hanumant Jagdale — had constantly demanded money from him and threatened to stop his projects if he failed to fulfil their demands. Suraj told me their demands kept increasing. There were 300-350 builders in Thane, but they specifically targeted Cosmos group. Suraj told me that they would use civic officials to pressurise him to give in to their demands. He said he was frustrated.”

Second witness
Name: Manish Mehta (44)
Profession: Businessman and one of Parmar’s partner
Mehta, in his statement to the police on September 2015, said when Parmar and his architect had visited TMC, Vikrant Chavan threatened him saying that he has clicked pictures of his project and would see to it that it misses its deadline.

Third witness
Name: Suvarna Ghosh (48)
Profession: Architect at Cosmos group
In her statement, Ghosh said she knew Parmar since 2008. “Parmar used to often say that for the past 3 to 4 years, the golden gang of TMC — the four corporators — are harassing him and their gang leader is Naresh Mhaske.
