Thane: Two minors were seriously injured when they were allegedly hit by a car in Damani Estate area in Thane, police said.

The incident occurred last afternoon when the driver was allegedly speeding and lost control of the vehicle, which hit Jia Thakkar (6) and Parth Thakkar (6), both cousins. The children were admitted to a private hospital in a serious condition. Both children received fractures, head injuries and developed internal bleeding. Jia Thakkar's condition is said to be critical, while Parth is out of danger. The incident occurred at Thane's Navpada area.

Police have arrested the car driver, after identified as Dilip Gunjal (37), in connection with the accident. Gunjal, who attempted to drive away after CCTV footage from a jewellery shop in the area captured him hitting the children, was handed over to police yesterday by locals who gathered at the spot of the accident.

According to the police, Gunjal said that he accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the break and hence lost control of the vehicle, leading to the mishap. A teacher by profession, he was apparently going to the same society where the children live.

He has been booked under various sections of Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act.
