Jitendra Singh Raj Purohit is far from being flattered; he is embarrassed by and furious at the ‘attention’ he has been getting. The 25-year-old Thane resident has been hassled by the sheer number of flirtatious calls and WhatsApp messages he has received from Pakistani nationals over the last 75 days.

Purohit isn’t a victim of the menace of SIM cards being reused. Instead, his was a ‘new’ number. Turns out, the number was the same as the one that got enough air time in a Pakistani album — Laptop Mandiya Kudi — in 2014. A song in it features a man getting a call from his girlfriend, with her number prominently displayed on the phone’s screen. That’s the number Purohit ended up with when he went to get a SIM card 75 days ago.

“I needed a number ending with 8055. I am a fan of actor Akshay Kumar’s movie BOSS. Stylistically, the number bears the closest resemblance to the word,” said Purohit.

Right after getting the number, his nightmare began. “People began calling and messaging me to flirt with me. I received some 100 messages in a day,” he said.

Some 15 days go, Purohit approached the telecom company’s office where he had bought the SIM card from, demanding that it discontinue the number.

“The executive told me this could be done only after 90 days of use, and suggested that I block the numbers.”

Purohit has also approached the Wagle Estate police, seeking some recourse.

R Malekar, senior inspector, Wagle Estate police, said they have asked him to visit the station today. “We will then start a probe.”
