Thane: Mobile, SIM cards found in dreaded gangster's cell again

An association with an underworld gang has its own set of perks for inmates, especially in jail. Devendra Baburao Jagtap, a sharp shooter associated with Chhota Shakeel’s gang has access to mobile phones in his jail cell, and enjoys seamless connectivity to the outside world.

Jail officials seized a high-end Samsung phone, two SIM cards and three mobile batteries from his cell on Monday.

This is the second time that a mobile phone has been recovered from Jagtap in jail, who was arrested in 2013 for killing lawyer Shahid Azmi in February 2010. Earlier, a phone was found from his cell in August 2014. The cell phone was recovered from cell number 2 of circle 9 in the Aadharwadi jail, where Jagtap alias JD is currently lodged.

Sherkhan Pathan, prison officer, got a tip-off that a mobile had been concealed in Jagtap’s cell, after which he carried out a raid along with other officers Krishna Salaskar and Chetan Sahane.

“One of the marble tiles in his bathroom was loosely fit. Initially, we thought it is because of the plaster but when we broke open the area, we found a two-feet deep hole in which the mobile, the SIM cards and batteries were hidden,” said a police officer from Aadharwadi jail on condition of anonymity, adding that they have informed the jail superintendent and the Khadakpada police station.

Police says
“We have registered a case and further investigations are on. We will check the call records,” said Gulabrao Gore, senior cop of Khadakpada police station, adding that relevant section of Prisoners Act and section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian penal code has been levied against Jagtap.

Despite repeated attempts, Aadharwadi jail superintendent Subhash Pawar could not be reached for comments.

JD was shifted from Taloja jail after opening fire at gangster Abu Salem in 2013, after which he was given a single accommodation in the Kalyan-based prison.

He had claimed that he shot at Salem at the behest of Shakeel, a close aide of dreaded underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.
