A 23-year-old police constable attached with the Thane commissionerate attempted suicide by firing at his chest. The incident took place on Thursday night, when he was on duty. He was taken to Thane civil hospital and later to Jupiter hospital, where he is undergoing treatment and in a critical condition.

The police found a note written by the victim that stated he had decided to take a drastic step after regular fights with his girlfriend. He, however, had added that he didn't blame her for it and was doing it of his own volition.

Cause & effect
According to the police, the victim has been identified as Sagar Ganpat Malunjkar. "Since the last three months, he had been posted at the Thane headquarters. The incident took place on Thursday at 11.35 pm, when he fired a round from the SLR weapon on him. There were two other constables with him in the room at the time of the incident," said Namdev Shinde, Reserve Police Inspector, Thane commissionerate. Officers from the Thane crime branch and other departments close to the headquarters were called, who found him lying on the ground unconscious.

Tense matters
"We found him in a pool of blood. He had fired on his right shoulder," said an officer, adding, "In his statement, he said he was having some tension in his personal life." The Thane Nagar police are investigating the matter and yet to register a case. "We found the note, where he blames himself. Phone records show that he used to be engaged in long conversations with his girlfriend," said the officer.
