Until now, they were only seen managing the crowd and as part of bandobast duty during marathons among many other events. Now, for the first time, they will be doing the running.

The Thane police department has organised a marathon for its personnel as well as their family members to create awareness among them on fitness.

Around 4,000 policemen with families will be participating in the event, which will be held in Hiranandani on October 23. Model-actor Milind Soman will be flagging off the 5-, 10- and 21-km runs.

Training time
The initiative has been undertaken by NGO Thank You India along with the police. NGO co-founder Kavin Kondathini, who is a marathon runner himself, started training sessions for the men in khaki a week ago.

“We have started training policemen in all five zones of Thane city commissionerate. In every zone, at least 60 policemen come for training sessions and are encouraged to take part. Once a week I go to these sessions and give my inputs. I have trained many marathon runners, this is the first time I am training policemen,” said Kondathini.

“We found that they are completely stressed because of work and other pressures and didn’t get time to exercise or stay fit. The marathon will change this. My motive is to make them active, so that even after the marathon, they give priority to health and fitness.”

He said he started the training with the usual exercise and was confident of making them the best runners before the D-Day.

Cop speak
Commissioner of Police, Thane, Parambir Singh, who is known for being fit and active, is a part of the initiative.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Thane Crime Branch, Parag Manare said, “Normally, we notice policemen deployed for bandobast during festivals and marathons. But this time, they will be the participants... Our basic aim is to create awareness about fitness among them and encourage them to keep it up even after the run is over. Also, it will be like a family get-together.”
