'What is the use of filling potholes after a person is dead?'

Titwala resident Vijay Kendre was used to running an obstacle course around the potholes on his daily commute until Wednesday, but one of the gaping craters claimed his life. A truck crushed the 35-year-old assistant manager with HDFC Bank after his bike fell into a pothole on the Kalyan-Bhiwandi road. While the local police claim they have filled the potholes and lit the streetlights on the road, Kendre’s wife feels it is too little, too late.

The Kongaon police who have registered a case and arrested the lorry driver claim they have spoken to authorities and lit the streetlights and filled the potholes.

Promoted 10 days ago
Pathak, who has been working with Kendre for the last 8 years, said that Kendre was promoted as the best employee in the firm just 10 days ago.

“Since the last 8 years, we would regularly travel through the road and potholes were a usual problem. On Wednesday, we managed to skip the first two potholes, but the bike fell into the third one. Vijay fell and came under the back tire of a lorry, which was coming from behind. Despite wearing a helmet, he was dead on the spot. I was thrown on the other side and was safe with minor injuries,” added Pathak. He says that Kendre told him how his only dream was to make a dream house for his family and settle his son’s career.

Police says
Mangesh Sawant, senior police inspector, Kongaon police station said, “We registered a case on Wednesday and arrested the lorry driver the same night. Also, after getting in touch with local authorities, we have filled up the potholes and have lit the street lights that were earlier making travel on the road difficult,” added Sawant.
