Thane: Joy knew no bounds for residents of a small tribal village in Thane's Wada taluka when their homes were lit with electricity for the first time on the commencement of 'Navaratri' festival.

The residents of Tilmall hamlet in Wada taluka, located about 50 kms from Thane, had never seen electric lights in their houses. However, following efforts by the villagers and local leaders, the hamlet received power connection.

A function in this regard was held at the village on Tuesday where former MLA Vivek Pandit, chief of the Shramajivi Sanghatana which made efforts for electricity supply to the village, switched on the power connection. The villagers were elated when their thatched huts were lit with electricity.

Pandit said he had taken up the issue with the district planning officials many times. The hamlet has a total of 32 families with a population of just 207. Despite the fact that Wada is near Mumbai, the village had been lacking power supply, he said adding that several other villages and hamlets in Palghar district still did not have power connections.

Senior police officials in the area and other office-bearers and activists of the Sanghatana were also present on the occasion.
