Moeen Ali, 26 not out overnight in a then total of 343 for seven, made 77. Left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc led Australia's attack with five wickets for 114 runs in 24.1 overs.
England had collapsed to 43 for three before Joe Root's 134 boosted their total.
