The balancing act

Balancing comes naturally to Smita Thackeray. The woman has been straddling film production with social work and family commitments for a long time now. Every bit in command as she attends to the cast and crew of her upcoming film, Society, this petite lady talks to CS about the various roles she juggles:

WHO: Smita Thackeray
WHAT: Talking about juggling her roles
WHERE: At her office in Andheri (West)

Role call
I feel that every individual has the capacity to fulfill different roles. We see millions of women shouldering various responsibilities both at work and home. I am no different. Even as I handle my varied projects, I make sure that I have time for my kids. As a producer, it's my job to meet artists and make sure that everything's on time. But I don't get involved in the nitty-gritties of film-making as I don't understand it. What I love doing is social work.

Women on top
I believe that every person can make a difference to society. Through my organisation, Mukti Foundation I want to reach out to those women, who are yet to find their voice in this world. I have been lucky to get support from good doctors, volunteers and individuals who want to contribute whole-heartedly towards women's causes. It is a small step towards a better society.

With the Women's Reservation Bill coming into force, I hope that women will get better opportunities. We live in a unequal society. Nowadays, we are becoming more and more westernised but how many Indian men help their wives in the housework, I ask? An average Indian woman does double or triple the work of a man. That's not fair. Changing that trend would be a challenge!

Life is a challenge
I too like taking up challenges, and always have. As a youngster, I wasn't a bright student. My parents however wanted one of us sisters to get a first class in graduation. So, I studied really hard in my final year and passed out with a distinction. That success made me a more confident person. My parents sure made me the person that I am and my father-in-law, Balasaheb Thackeray also influenced my life in a big way. After marriage, I joined my late husband's ticketing agency where I learnt that in our male-dominated society, a woman has to work hard to earn respect. You don't get enough support unless you prove yourself. However, I have always grabbed opportunities and tried to make the best of them.
