The call of the Coast

A city star hotel recently decided to give us a dash of coastal cuisine from the palm-fringed beaches of Goa.

The atmosphere was essentially Goan with singers regaling us with Konkani songs about life in Goa, staff handing us Fenny-infused coconut water from carts that they were going around with and the elaborate cuisine that the state is famous for.

There was Pork Vindaloo, Chicken Cafreal and Reshad, Fried Squid, King Fish and Pomfret served along with Goan Rice. The Vindaloo was sour and pungent with a hint of sweetness and packed in quite a punch.

You can also choose from over ten salads, breads and home-made Goan pickles.

And the bite-sized desserts comprised the traditional Bibinca, a layered cake made out of coconut milk and the Dodol, a toffee like Goan sweet among other traditional Indian sweets like Kesari Kheer and Chamcham.

But it was the after-dinner coffee that came laced with a strong shot of fenny, a dollop of vanilla scented cream rimmed with coarse brown sugar that marked a perfect draw to the evening.

The coffee was sweet, the fenny was strong and the cream a fragrant accompaniment. A creation of the in-house chef, this coffee shotu00a0 was like liquid fire.
