Veteran actor Avtar Kishan Hangal breathed his last early morning yesterday. The thespian suffered a hip fracture on August 14 and was admitted to the Asha Parekh Hospital in Santacruz for treatment two days later.
He had been in a critical condition since then. The 97-year-old finally lost his battle on Sunday. Hangal’s funeral took place yesterday afternoon at Pawan Hans crematorium in Vile Parle.
The former freedom fighter was one of the founders of the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) and one of its most-loved members. Bollywood fans will best remember Hangal for his amazing performances in Sholay, Shaukeen, Ram Teri Ganga Maili and, more recently, Lagaan. Hangal is survived by his son Vijay.
