Clove Bar and Grill is the latest North Indian fine-dine address at Bandra. WHAT's ON stopped by, and came away unimpressed

Tucked away in a blink-and-you-miss-corner off Pali Market in Bandra, Clove Bar and Grill appears to be a nice place for a quiet sit-down dinner, especially when you've had a rough week at work. But appearances can be deceptive, and how!

The dining area is not particularly large, giving it a cozy feel. Once the place fills up, the guy on the next table might as well be sitting on your lap. The music is random; lounge music, really; quite disconnected from the flavours on the North Indian menu. The lights are dim for most part of the evening, until the waiters decide to start playing with the switches to give you a disco feel.

On the menu: Much like the dining area, the menu isn't expansive. You won't find that exciting dish you are looking for. We ordered the Veg Clove Platter (Rs 350) to start with. The waiter suggested Clove Lamb Balti (Rs 240) and Veg Kadhai (Rs 210) with Parathas (Rs 50) and Missi Roti (Rs 40), for the main course.

For a restaurant that calls itself a Bar, the place hasn't acquired a liquor license. Having suffered the starters was not enough; our waiter decided to change the order and bring us Tandoori Rotis instead of Missi Roti and Paratha. So, while the Clove Lamb Balti and Veg Kadhai sat on our table staring at us, we waited for the right order to arrive. We dug in and were struck by the excessive garlic and garam masala! Deciding that the chef should be given a chance to redeem himself, we ordered Gulab Jamun (Rs 80) for dessert. It was heated in a microwave; not a good note to end a meal on.

Service: Waiters have to be hollered at if you want to grab their attention, and we thought that was reason enough not to leave a tip. They claim they haven't "officially launched". We suggest the management plugs the holes, before they do.

At: 33 Road, Ambedkar Road Junction, off Pali Market, Bandra (W).
Open from 12 noon to 3 pm, 7 pm to 12 pm.
