Shiv Sainiks are set to distribute over 21,000 knives today to women, in a bid to help them fight crimes. However, how helpful is carrying a weapon? Here's a reality check on what women think of carrying a knife

The knives are out, but do women want them?

On the eve of late Sena supremo Bal Thackeray’s 87th birth anniversary, Shiv Sena’s South Central Mumbai wing will distribute over 21,000 knives to women in Ganesh Galli, Lalbaug, at 7.30 pm today.

This idea to combat sexual harassment is a new one as compared to the self-defense classes that are on a rise in the city. When questioned about the legality of distributing a weapon, Ajay Chaudhary, Shiv Sena Vibhag Pramukh of South Central Mumbai area questioned, “I am doing it to avoid another rape. If someone tries to rape a girl, will he not do the act if she explains the legal consequences to him?

Rahul Narvekar, who heads the party’s legal cell added his weight to the act by saying, “It is not a crime to keep or gift a knife. If it is being used with an intention to commit a crime then it will be an offense.” “We all talk about saving girls. I am doing so by distributing knives,” Chaudhary added.

It is good to have a knife in your pocket. These knives are handy and can be used in emergency anytime.

Perverts needs to be handled this way. Distributing knives is an amazing idea as red chili powder might not work. Someone might run away only after seeing the knife in our hand or will at least think twice before attacking.

A knife might not work. We need to be strong on our own. We might not get time to take the knife from our bag when the situation arrives. Also, a knife can be misused too if misplaced. Rather, girls should be taught how to handle such an untoward situation on their own.
Ankita Kadam, college student

Our law does not permit us to keep this. Also, these weapons are of no use when you are been attacked by a group of men. This small knife will not work.”
Gauri Sawant, resident of Mazgaon

Looking at the Delhi case, I think every woman should carry a knife. The Shiv Sena initiative is appreciable.
