High drama ensued on Fergusson College road after a thief snatched a bag, was caught, and then started banging his head on the grills fitted in the middle of the road.

The arrested man was identified as Amjad Mehbub Tamboli (28) of Ram Mandir Chowk, Shrirampur. The police said he snatched a bag from a girl waiting outside Vaishali restaurant. The thief was was chased by people and security guards. Citizen journalist Sudhakar Sanjivee, a team leader at Reliance Web World, captured the drama as it unfolded on his mobile.u00a0

Sanjivee said, "The man in his twenties was hiding in the passage adjoining the Reliance Web World and was caught by an angry mob. He was being beaten up when the police arrived. When he realised there was no way to escape he started banging his head on the grill on the road," Sanjivee said. "The road was blocked for 30 minutes because of the commotion."

Senior Police Inspector Kashinath Umbarje was injured as he tried to stop the thief from banging his head on the iron grill. Umbarje received four stitches on his hand.u00a0
