Theresa May to take over as Britain's new PM: Interesting facts

Theresa May is all set to take over from David Cameron as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on Wednesday, thus making her the second female UK prime minister after Margaret Thatcher.

Theresa May

A brief profile: May was born in Eastbourne, Sussex, and studied geography at the St Hugh's College, Oxford. She served as a councillor for the London Borough of Merton's Durnsford Ward.

In 1997, she was elected as the MP for Maidenhead for the general election. From 2002 until 2003, she was the Chairman of the Conservative Party.

In the coalition government formed after the 2010 general election, May was appointed as Home Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities. In 2012, she gave up the latter post. The Conservative party won again in 2015, and was reappointed, thus becoming the longest-serving Home Secretary since James Chuter Ede.

After Cameron resigned in the wake of Brexit, May’s name came to the fore as frontrunner. She won the first ballot of Conservative MPs on 5 July, and a couple of days later, votes of 199 MPs. She was to face a contest against Andrea Leadsom, but the latter’s withdrawal paved the way for May’s appointment.
