These B-Town mothers show parents the way...

Pooja Bedi
Book smart important?

Important, but not enough. It is only important for your basics in maths, history, geography, science till high school.
Performance pressure?
Never. My mother would ban be from doing homework! I'd hide from her and do my HW. In fact, when I went to Lawrence School, Sanawar, I turned out to be the class topper!
Dealing with stress
The best way to beat stress is to enjoy the learning process. The educational years are only for a certain number of years. Make the most of it by going with the flow.
Any advice?
For parents not to be driven by percentages. I was reading an article about how low marks does not mean no marks. Hillary Clinton failed her law exams, Princess Diana flunked her O-Levels, John F Kennedy failed his bar exam twice while Steven Spielberg dropped out of Sophomore! Kids, try to enjoy it; it is only for some years of your life.
Educational Qualification
After completing my schooling from Lawrence School, Sanawar, I did my class 11 and 12 in Los Angeles.

BHAGYASHREE
Book-smart. Important?

More than learning by rote and mugging it is important to acquire practical knowledge. This is one of the reasons why I enrolled both my children in IGCSE schools where the approach is more towards involving the children to understand what they are being taught.
Performance pressure?
Obviously there was a need to score better.
Dealing with stress
My dad had taught us how to have photographic memory of remembering everything what you read. To avoid stress, I would visualise what I had was studying.
Any advice?
I don't remember ever telling my children go study right now! Parents should inculcate regular study habits and reward them when they do well. But children should understand that no parent will love the child less if he or she does not get an A plus. A parent's love is constant.
Educational Qualification
I did my schooling at Jamnabai Narsee and did my BCom from Mithibai. In fact when I was shooting for Maine Pyar Kiya, I had made a special request to Sooraj Barjatya to let me attend college.

Mehr Jesia
Book-smart. Important?

Apart from studying its also important to develop social skills.
Performance pressure?
I always had my mom around me. She was a constant motivating factor. I could talk to her about anything. Now I make sure that I am there for my kids.u00a0 It's more about creating a stress free environment where kids can think freely and choose their area of interest..
Dealing with stress
I was very good in math and science, but I dreaded the languages. I always had my mom to talk to so there was no such pressure.
Any advice?
My kids go to a school (Ambani) where the focus is more on overall development than just grade performance. It's sad what's happening with today's kids. Even though my kids are still young, I don't see myself telling them to pursue a certain stream or take up a particular profession. Giving them space and letting them make their own choice is important.
Edu Qual?
I won my Miss India during my college, so that took care of everything. But I was very studious in school and would get good grades.

POONAM DHILLON
Book-smart. Important?

Being book smart does not only mean school and college books. It could be a novel, an encyclopedia. you don't have to restrict yourself to academic books. You don't have to limit yourself.
Performance pressure?
Never. My parents used to tell us to study less. We used to put alarm clocks and wake up and study ourselves. But then there were not too many distractions then.
Dealing with stress
I enjoyed what I did, I was also the sports captain, so there was this sense of achievement of being good at sports and studies.
Any advice?
I want to tell students that there are good times and there are bad times. There are phases in life. It is important to do your best at times needed. Parents should take the middle path by not pushing kids too hard but at the same time can't take it easy as there are too many distractions nowadays u2014 four hours on Facebook is more attractive than doing HW. So we have to tell them that there is a time and space for everything
Educational Qualification
I did my schooling in Chandigarh and then films beckoned. I did my BA via correspondence.
