The ATM theft case of October 28 is solved, say the police. The incident at the Union Bank ATM in Kasarwadi in the wee hours of the morning had baffled investigating agenciesu00a0-- an entire automated teller machine weighing 300 kg had been lifted and taken away.
Then, last week, when three men tried to rob Solunke Jewellers, locals nabbed one of them, Vijay Charia (32).
A lead after months
During police interrogation, Charia spilled the beans on his accomplices and revealed their role in the ATM theft.
The police traced Charia's accomplices, identified as Dinesh Katewade (23), Dnyaneshwar Ambole (19) and Prakash Bankar (19), and they admitted they had carried away the machine in a Maruti van owned by Charia and later opened it with a gas cutter. They said the iron pieces of the cut-up machine were thrown into the Indrayani River.
Police Inspector Ravindra Chaudhar said, "After a two-day search all the parts of the ATM have been recovered from the river but for the screen, which is still missing. The machine had contained Rs 10.5 lakh, which was distributed among the four."
ACP Prabhakar Patil said, "Charia has five offenses registered against him, including a murder in Khadki. Not installing security measures cost the bank heavily."
