The third man who allegedly molested a 21-year-old girl in the wee hours on Sunday at Dharavi was caught yesterday; police said the man has a history of criminal cases. Bandra police had already arrested the other two accused earlier. The trio also allegedly assaulted the woman’s boyfriend and robbed them of mobile phones and cash.
According to the police, the third accused has been identified as Pappu Pradip (22). The other two accused are Abdul Shaikh (22) and Farhad Sayyad (21).
Rajendra Kane, police inspector (crime) at Bandra police station, said, “The third accused has been arrested. He is a history sheeter and we are looking at his past cases.”
According to the victim’s statement, she and her boyfriend had gone out in the wee hours of Sunday in search of cigarettes. Finding all roadside shops near the station shut, they went inside a small lane and reached the Dharavi bridge near S L Raheja Hospital.
Here, the trio met the couple and told them they knew a shop that was open nearby and suggested that they follow them. They led them to an isolated spot behind a tempo in Shastri Nagar, and asked the boy to fork out all the money he had. When he refused, the three assaulted him; when the victim tried to intervene, one of them tried kissing her hand. In the scuffle, the trio managed to grab her purse and also two mobile phones — one worth Rs 30,000 and one worth Rs 3,000. The purse contained Rs 500 in cash.
The couple, who live in Parel, later lodged a case with the Bandra police. However, a police officer said, “The woman and her boyfriend were searching for cannabis and the trio told them they would get it in Shastri Nagar and that they would take them there. When they reached the spot, they all consumed the drug and the trio tried robbing the couple. When the boyfriend put up a fight, they assaulted him. The victim came forward and was pushed and allegedly molested.”
Cops further added that the duo were under the influence of drugs when they had come to register the case. The woman works with a travel company, while her 22-year-old boyfriend is a manager with a private firm.
The case is registered under sections 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 392 (robbery) and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.
