Third time's the charm: GRP constable to be awarded for returning valuables three times

Even though most people don’t trust the Mumbai police, this Government Railway Police (GRP) constable forces a rethink. Constable Anil Jagdane, attached with the Kalyan GRP, returned a bag containing 13 tolas of gold to the rightful owner. However, this is not the first time that Jagdane’s honesty has been displayed. Twice before, Jagdane has returned lost bags to their owners.

Speaking of the incident, Sampat Nirmal, inspector, Kalyan GRP, said, “The bag belonged to a jeweller by the name of Sandeep Rameshchandran Jain. He was supposed to meet his client at Mumbra today at 10 am and deliver the gold consignment worth Rs 4 lakh. He was talking on the phone while he was in the train and got down at Mumbra.”

MiD DAY’s report on November 11

Nirmal added that Jain later realised he had forgotten his bag and informed the authorities of the bag. “Constable Jagdane collected the bag and then handed it over to Jain,” said Nirmal. When MiD DAY spoke to Jagdane, the Good Samaritan said, “I have often seen people committing suicide when they have lost their bags. I don’t need anyone’s money. God has given me enough.”

Third time honest
This is not the first time that Jagdane has returned a lost bag. In November 2013, he had returned a bag with Rs 90,000 in it to the owner (‘GRP recovers lost bag with Rs 90,000 in 30 minutes,’ November 10). Additionally, he had also returned another bag with 0.5 tola of gold in it. Seeing his honesty, the Kalyan GRP is going to felicitate Jagdane and also going to recommend his name for an award. “For his good work, we have suggested his name for a reward, which will be handed out by Commissioner of Railways Prabhat Kumar,” added Nirmal.
