NCPA's collaboration with National Theatre, London has already given theatre lovers in the city the opportunity to watch over ten exceptional productions. After the completion of one successful season, Marianne Elliott's play, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, ushers in the new season of NT Live
Based on the popular 2003 novel by British writer Mark Haddon, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is a play about a 15-year-old boy who tries to solve the mystery of the death of the neighbour’s dog and ends up uncovering many secrets related to his own life. This new production by National Theatre, London, garnered favourable response and owing to a collaboration with the NCPA, this play will be screened for the city’s theatre lovers on September 23, 24 and 25.

Live for Mumbai
NCPA’s collaboration with National Theatre started in 2010 and about 10 plays have already been screened as part of the project. NT Live is a project that involves new productions by National Theatre being filmed and then broadcast live to cinemas around the world so that these productions can reach a very diverse audience. “In India, because of the time difference it is not exactly live but slightly deferred,” reveals Deepa Gehlot, head programming, (Theatre), NCPA adding that the productions are screened live in about 500 cinemas around the world. Some of the productions that were screened as part of the first season include Frankenstein, Cherry Orchard, The Kitchen, Collaborators and Comedy of Errors.

Though this initiative, theatre lovers in Mumbai get to watch international plays live sitting here in Mumbai. “The response has been great. Theatre artists and the public have loved watching these screenings,” says Gehlot. “It is a great opportunity for them to understand the production values of an international play. How the people work in another country, the different ways a story can be interpreted and presented and a lot more can be learnt through this. It gives artistes in India tremendous exposure and helps them grow in the field,” she adds.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is about Christopher, who is exceptional in math but is not well equipped to handle small things of daily life, bordering on the autistic spectrum. When he discovers that his neighbour’s dog has been killed, he comes under suspicion, and decides to solve the mystery. He embarks on an unknown scary journey, where he uncovers many secrets of his life.
