Yet another case of an incarcerated don making extortion calls from a mobile phone comes to light
Despite repeated crackdowns, inmates across the country continue to use mobile phones inside jails across
the country.
The latest such instance to come to light is that of Venkatesh (40), a cab driver who received an extortion call for Rs 1 lakh on Tuesday from gangster Ravi alias Bombay Ravi (47), who is lodged in Bellary Jail on charges of
murder.
Venkatesh says this is not the first time he has been harassed by Ravi, whose gang operates in the Tyagrajnagar neighbourhood.

Venkatesh got a shock of his life, when the Shankarapuram police summoned him on Friday and revealed they had arrested a gang of armed men who were moving suspiciously between Shankarapuram and Tyagrajnagar a few days ago.
It emerged during the interrogation that followed that Ravi had ordered his men to eliminated Venkatesh.
"I should have not associated with him. I should have avoided ferrying him and his men around.
Everyone is scared of him as he is a local goon. He would trouble us, if we defied him," Venkatesh said.
It may be recalled thatu00a0 prison authorities recently conducted a series of raids on the major prison across the state and confiscated cell phones from inmates.
A senior officer of the Central Crime Branch told this reporter that over 50 per cent of crime in and around the city was connected in some way to the use of cell phones byu00a0 inmates.
"With access to mobile phones, it is not difficult for gang leaders to operate from prison," the officer explained.
Recently, central prison authorities nabbed a woman jail warden for trying to sneak marijuana and SIM cards into the prison.
