Self-styled godman, Asaram Bapu has shocked and disgusted the nation with his remarks about the gang rape victim. He has stated that she should have called the rapists brothers and something about one hand not being used to clap and other such inanities. If one could actually make a chart with the trash that has spilled out of all kinds of leaders mouths post the gang rape, this one would surely be a topper.
As if that was not enough, Asaram Bapu has then likened himself to an elephant and the press to barking dogs for misconstruing his words and misquoting him. He has said that he would not inflate the media’s importance by running after them, whatever that means.
In another statement Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi has hit the headlines by saying that women should not wear short dresses, have boyfriends or venture out into the streets without relatives at night. His son, Farhan Azmi has spoken out against these comments saying they were politically incorrect. Thankfully, Abu Azmi has not gone down the familiar path by blaming the media for misquoting him.
One has to think whether these leaders know what they are saying or are simply spouting stuff that they think will appeal to their so-called followers. If they are misquoted as they claim, maybe they need to go to communication classes. Till they have mastered the art of precise communication maybe they should realise the merit in that hoary, old cliche silence is golden.
Maybe we should stop wasting time trying to ascertain why they said what they did. The pure and simple answer to that question is staring us straight in the face they believe in what they have said. Welcome to the age of unbelievable regression.
