Police Inspector Bhanupratap Barge has fought underworld, arrested terrorists and trapped spies in city

Police Inspector Bhanupratap Shankarrao Barge is now a name that is associated with almost all high profile events and cases in the country. Be it the shootout at Lokhandwala, arresting Sikh terrorists, or the arrests of four Pakistani spies operating in the city, PI Barge has done it all.

A student of Fergusson College, Barge joined the police force in 1985. He was posted in Mumbai from 1985 to 2005 and after that in the city on various designations. Currently, he is heading a special investigation team and also the social security cell of the crime branch. He is the first Indian police officer to receive the 'Survivors Club Membership', an international award for action against terrorists.

The two spies Army Jawan Brijeshkumar Singh and his accomplice Vishambhar Agarwal were also arrested recently by Barge and his team.

"Most of the men caught transferring sensitive information to their Pakistani counterparts are lured by huge sums of money. Their initial intention may not be of betrayal, but they surely commit an offence which is unpardonable. Spy work cannot be justified in any way and hence there's no return for such youngsters," Barge said.

Barge does not forget to mention the role of central intelligence agencies who give valuable inputs to the local police teams. "It is because of their inputs that we can close in on the suspect, put him on surveillance and unearth a big racket," Barge said.

Barge recalled one such undercover operation in which he had worked as a security guard in a housing society in Mira Road, Mumbai. He had to keep a watch on the suspect's movements and also carry out his 'duties' as watchman of the society.

"As I was busy monitoring the suspects, I could not turn on the supply from water tanks. An old lady complained about me to the security agency in-charge. After the operation was successful, news broke out and the lady came to know that I was a policeman in disguise. The whole society came to meet me," Barge said.
