Now, for Nature. It's Spring, after all. Between Heaven and Earth is a semi-retrospective showcase of more than 80 small-format paintings in 2.5 x 3.5 inches each, by the lateu00a0 Bireswar Sen.

Above and beyond: Milkmaid, part of the Water series

Of cold mountains and warm water
The exhibition is inspired by the Himalayas, with the veteran artist's works capturing the grandeur of nature. The series has been thematically divided into six sections, titled Mountains, Caves, Clouds and skies, Water, The human spirit and Woods. They are all water-colour paintings that exude an innate sense of serenity and solace.

Small-town treasure
"Bireswar Sen was helplessly drawn to the mountains, painting the Himalayas again and again. He had spent a major portion of his life in the Naggar district of Kullu, and captured the caves, lakes and forests in all their wild forms. As a matter of fact, Bireswar mainly painted in small format, so we thought that this was an interesting opportunity to get together his works together," says Mamta Singhania, director, Anant Art Gallery, who has been following the form since quite sometime.

Child is the father of art
An interesting concept is the presence of human forms in a small way, making them merely there, instead of ruling the canvas. A pilgrim approaching a cave, a disciple at the feet of his master, a maiden picking her way through a forest, a traveller wading through a field of snow or a child following her mother at the edge of a lakeu00a0-- all come alive with the human touch.

Curator B.N. Goswamy sums it up the best. "It is Sen's landscapesu00a0-- small, jewel-like miniaturesu00a0-- which stand out; which come, in fact, almost to define him. The landscapes he painted appear, for the most part, to have been memory-images or recollections: evocations, in a manner of speaking."
Poignancy, after all, lies in the small things.
