The drama that unfolded on the terrace of a Khetwadi high-rise on Friday shocked and surprised residents as well as cops and locals. Hundreds watched in horror as a 26-year-old woman paced up and down the parapet of the terrace for nearly two hours, contemplating suicide (‘2-hour suicide drama in SoBo highrise’, December 28). A statement taken by the cops from the woman finally shed some light on the mystery, confirming that marital problems had driven the woman to take the drastic step.

Sonia Chowdhury is now undergoing psychiatric treatment at Nair Hospital

Not a single resident of the building was acquainted with the Nallasopara resident, identified as Sonia Chowdhury (26). She had simply walked into the high-rise, asked the liftman to take her to the seventh floor, from where she made it to the terrace. Rescue operations went on for two hours on Friday till the woman was brought down from the parapet. According to the police, Chowdhury is still undergoing treatment at Nair Hospital.

The DB Marg police station recorded her statement, in which Chowdhury revealed that she was distraught as her husband had not been giving her any time. She also said that her concern for the well-being of her five-year-old daughter prevented her from taking the final plunge.

A police officer said, on condition of anonymity, “She has told us that she was going through a traumatic time in her marriage and in this frustration she decided to give up on her life. But in spite of all this she still thought about her 5-year-old daughter and did not jump off. She has realised her mistake and her husband too has assured that he will care for her and give her more time in the future. She is undergoing psychiatric treatment in Nair Hospital. We have not spoken to anybody apart from her husband, as others present on the spot on Friday were just residents.”

Senior Inspector Ajit Surve said, “We have recorded the statement of the woman and she is still in Nair Hospital. She said in her statement that she was going through a difficult time in her marriage. Hence, she had taken such a decision. But she thought about her kid and did not take the wrong step.”
