Three arrested for committing petty crimes during Bal Thackeray's funeral

Mumbai's Crime Branch has arrested three persons for allegedly being involved in several chain snatchings and other incidents of petty crime during Bal Thackeray's funeral procession on November 18.

More then 20 cases of chains snatching and other petty crimes took place on November 18, with 15 being registered at the Mahim police station and the others at Shivaji Park police station. Some of the accused were caught red-handed by the crowd on that day, while other cases remained unsolved.


The three accused who were arrested on Monday -- Raju alias Atmaram Hatagale, Keshav Koste and Mahadev Gajge –are aged around 20 to 22 and are habitual offenders. They were produced in court and have been handed over to the Shivaji Park police. The police said the accused have confessed to the crimes and four chains recovered from the trio.

The police said that after committing the thefts in Shivaji Park area, the accused went to a jeweler in Sakinaka to sell all the gold. The trio got about Rs 1.5lakh cash for the stolen goods. The accused then went to Pune and spent some of the amount on their girlfriends and after returning to Mumbai spent heavily on bar girls.


On Monday, the crime branch unit of MIDC got a tip off that the three accused were hiding out and were due to come near Good Luck hotel in MIDC and police officer Rauf Shaikh and constable Khanvilkar subsequently nabbed the three.

Police inspector Rauf Sheikh said, “They have confessed to the crime. We have also recovered gold valuables. We have handed the three accused to Shivaji Park police for further investigations.”u00a0
