A trio of 15-year-olds was caught stealing cellphones and cash from tourists enjoying waterfalls at Lonavla. The Std X students would use the phones to show off to their friends in school and spend the cash on travelling to Pune to watch movies and dine at fancy restaurants.
Sadhana Patil, assistant police inspector with the Lonavla rural police, said, "There had been 17 cases of theft in the area; so, we deployed two constables to patrol in plain clothes at Bhaja and Karla caves. On Wednesday, we detained three teenagers. They operated separately and stole mobile handsets and purses."
The constables who arrested the thieves are Ganesh Holkar and Sharad Jadhavkar. They recovered 10 cellphones from the trio; the owners of the mobile phones have been informed.
The trio was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board, which issued a warning to the three and granted them bail.
