Judging by the number of dance reality shows on television, it’s clear that India likes to shake a leg. To add to the hysteria is a workshop on a unique dance form called Soul Tatkaar, conceptualised by dancer Ada Kyra, who has spent four years researching various dance forms before designing her own in 2013.

kathak,

“I have been dancing since I was six,” says Kyra, who has mixed the concepts of flexibility, isolation and expression, while borrowing elements of kathak, belly dance and sufi-folk to come up with her original style. Yoga, too, is an important part of the dance, says Kyra, who is originally from Indore. “It’s usually danced to on soulful instrumental world music that allows room for interpretation.

The way you and I interpret and depict a musical composition will differ. For instance, you may use your chest to depict a tune, and I might use my shoulders and wrists,” she explains. “While belly dancing teaches you how to move your shoulders, wrist and chest in isolation, sufi folk focuses on emotion. Kathak is about footwork and expressions. Yoga, about strength and flexibility.” Kyra says participants can hope to go away, having been introduced to elements of the styles that find a seamless blend in Soul Tatkaar.
