The pair, who never married, have two children together, son Billy, 11, and daughter Nell, 7.
"Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter separated amicably earlier this year and have continued to be friends and co-parent their children," representatives for both Burton and Carter told a leading website.
"We would ask that you respect their privacy and that of their children during this time."
The 56-year-old director and the 48-year-old actress met in 2001 while filming 'Planet of the Apes', which Burton directed.
They made a great actor-director pair by working together in films like 'Big Fish', 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory',
'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street', 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Dark Shadows'.
The couple was at the centre of infidelity rumours last year after Burton appeared to be kissing a mystery blonde in a grainy photo but Carter was quick to slam such stories.
