However, the customary chaos turned fatal last year, when 24-year-old police aspirant Ramesh Amer from Ahmednagar district lost his life in a stampede at the Kalina police campus, where he had gone to submit his application for the post of a constable. Dozens of other candidates were severely injured in the same stampede.

Learning valuable lessons from this incident, the Mumbai police has decided make the entire submission process an online one this year.
The tragic even transpired in May last year, when around 30,000 young people gathered at the grounds to submit their forms for 3,600 vacancies for posts of police constable.
Anticipating a similar rush for the 3,467 vacant posts this year, the police department has decided to go net savvy. 
"The aspirants who come for admission, are already tired, after having undertaken long journeys on buses and trains. After arriving in Mumbai, they sleep on sidewalks, and line up in the wee hours to submit their forms.
Then they stand for 8-10 hours. This is a laborious process. To save them such inconvenience, we have come up with this smoother online submission process for the candidates," said a senior police officer at the Kalina police campus.
Mumbai Police spokesperson Nisar Tamboli said, "This system was on the cards for a very long time; it is finally being implemented. We are also planning to discontinue certain tests this year."
Revised procedure
The candidates can submit their forms online, from October 10 to November 3. They have to make a payment of the application fee at any Bank of India. They then have to key in their transaction ID, as obtained from the bank. This must be done before November 5. This is followed by shortlisting, physical tests, and written tests. Though the oral interview has been cancelled this year, tough grammar questions await the examinees.
The process till date
Forms are submitted at the Kalina campus through a single counter. The officials at the training institute scrutinise the submitted forms and create a merit list. Shortlisted candidates are sent for tests of stamina. Those who pass this test go forward for personal interviews and written tests. Finally, the selected candidate is sent for a nine-month-long training course.
