Woman from Orissa sexually assaulted in Connaught Place
IT is widely believed that Delhi is the crime capital of the country. It is also a well-known fact that this city is unsafe for women. The two elements came together on Sunday night when an Oriya woman was allegedly raped in the heart of the capital - Connaught Place.
The matter attains even more significance since the prime accused happens to be a traffic police constable posted inu00a0Chanakyapuri.
According to the police, 25-year-old Maya (name changed) was offered lift by constable S Singh and an unidentified associate in Connaught Place at 11 pm on May 23. Once she was inside the car, both the accused allegedly threatened the victim and raped her.
Maya claims that after this the accused snatched away a mobile phone and about Rs 1000-2000 from her possession. Thereafter they drove her near her residence in Lajpat Nagar, dumped her and fled the scene.
The victim dialed 100 to report the incident. A medical test confirmed rape. Finally a case was registered under section 376 of the IPC at the Connaught Place Police Station on Monday night. The two accused are yet to be apprehended and the case is being investigated.
The victim apparently lived alone in the city. Her family is in Orissa.
