Two cousins from Thane killed themselves within a day of each other allegedly after learning that they were in love with the same girl. The police interrogated the girl, but let her off after they found that she had no idea of their feelings for her.

The Kasarwadavli police, who have registered an accidental death case, found one suicide note which explains the reason behind the suicide. While one cousin killed himself on October 11, the other killed himself the very next day. Police said he may have feared he would be blamed for the other’s death.

The cousins have been identified as Harish Jadhav (24), a resident of Devichapada, Ghodbunder Road and Bhushan Gopal Gawli (23), a resident of Gawlipada in Ovla, Ghodbunder Road. The parents of both the men have not blamed anyone for the deaths.

The police said that Harish Jadhav used to work in one of the bungalows at Ovla and earned Rs30,000 a month, a huge sum in the area. Friends said, Gawli, who worked on the family’s farm, was apparently worried that the girl would be enamoured by the money and choose Jadhav over him.

Suicide note
The police said, “Gawli hanged himself from a mango tree outside his house on October 11. We found a suicide note in his house, written in his own hand, in which he has stated that he was in love with a girl in her 20s from the locality, who did not reciprocate his affections. They did, however, speak to each other over the phone. He later found out that the girl had also been speaking to his cousin, Jadhav.”

The police said Gawli believed she was leading them both on and was deeply hurt by this. “He became depressed and took the extreme step on October 11,” said the officer, on condition of anonymity.

Scared
Jadhav was shocked when he learnt about Gawli’s suicide and about the reason for it. “Jadhav became very scared when the whole village began to talk about the suicide and he may have been scare he would be booked for the suicide. The very next day he, too, hanged himself at his house. The truth behind the alleged love triangle will never be revealed as both are no more. But, the suicide note makes it clear that it was because both loved the same girl,” the officer said.

“We have registered two accidental death cases. There was some misunderstanding between the two youngsters that led them to take the extreme step. We are further investigating the matter,” said D. D. Tele, Senior Police Inspector, Kasarwadavli police station.
