By arresting a gang of three history-sheeters, who were targeting commuters at and around Pune railway station, officials from Government Railway Police (Pune division) claims to have solved three robbery cases that were committed in the recent past.

The accused were identified as Mangesh Sanjay Pawar (19) of Loni Kalbhor, Akash Krishna Pillai (22) of Queen’s Garden and Shoib Shakeel Khan (21) of Ganesh Peth.

The three accused are unemployed and have several cases registered against them.

Inspector Abhay Parmar, in-charge of the Pune railway police station, said, “Based on descriptions given by the victims and a tip-off, we nabbed the accused and recovered the stolen booty.”

GRP officials said Prashant Bhau Bare (20), a native of Junnar who resides in a hostel at Koregaon Park, was robbed of his mobile phone worth Rs 3,600 on the night of September 8. He had travelled by a passenger train from Shivajinagar to Pune railway station.

“Bare was walking towards his hostel via Ghorpadi washing centre, when the trio, sitting on the railway tracks, accosted him. They assaulted Bare and snatched his phone,” Parmar said.

The trio had earlier targeted Hyderabad-based assistant professor, G Vishwa Prasad (27), who teaches at a school of management studies. Prasad had come to the city to attend an international conference. The incident took place in the wee hours of August 30. He reached Pune station around 1 am and he was sleeping on platform no 1.

Around 4 am, the trio assaulted him and snatched his wallet, wristwatch and a gold ring weighing four grams. The booty was worth Rs 12,050.

“Prasad sent his complaint via e-mail from Hyderabad. He had also sent details on WhatsApp. We recovered all his items that were stolen from him,” Parmar said. In another incident, the trio stole LED and LCD monitors, worth R67,000, from a shop opposite the railway station, which was also recovered.

A case in this regard was registered at the Bund Garden police station. “Currently, the accused are in judicial custody. Further investigations are on to find out if they are involved in other similar cases,” Parmar said.
