Mumbai Food: Indulge in Peruvian-Mexican cuisine at Lokhandwala

"He looks familiar. Isn't he the guy who plays Yuvraj Singh in that MS Dhoni biopic?" our dining companion wondered when we spotted the gentleman behind the billing counter at TST Pollo A La Brasa. Later, we learnt that he indeed is Bollywood actor Herry Tangiri, who essayed the role of the left-handed batsman, appeared in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and also stars in the recent release, Behen Hogi Teri. Teaming up with Sumit Singh Sandhu and Yuvraj Singh Toor, Tangiri launched the Peruvian QSR in Lokhandwala a month ago. If you're still trying to figure it out, TST refers to the initials of the three partners. "We have a branch in Baltimore too," Tangiri told us.

Washed in the warm glow of light bouncing off narrow glass tables, the small eatery has a cheerful ambience with a Machu Picchu painting adorning a wall. The outdoor section has a garden-like feel with wooden benches. We spotted a couple of guests but delivery seems to be their main area of business. They deliver within five-km radius.

Peru meets Mexico
From Peru A Wingo (Peruvian Wings), Pollo A La Brasa (Roasted Chicken) and Arroz Chaufa (Peruvian Rice) to burritos, nachos, quesadillas and burgers, the menu offers a wide variety, extending its boundaries to include Mexican flavours too. We began with a plate of six Peruvian Wings (Rs 190). The moist, fall-off-the-bone meat was glazed with a delish honey-chilli sauce, which offered a medley of sweet-spicy flavours.

A mean roast
We moved on to Burrito Grande (Rs 200). Though generously-sized, the vegetarian option turned out to be a bland rendition, only stuffed with sour cream-laced Mexican rice. We missed the texture of beans and some salsa on the side.

We then ordered a Peruvian combo called The Mob (Rs 550). A full portion of Pollo A La Brasa (roasted chicken legs and breast) arrived with four sides - Garlic Bread, House Salad, Peruvian Beans and Peruvian Corn - along with a large portion of vegetarian Arroz Chaufa (rice) and two cans of cold drinks. The huge chunks of roast-till-charred chicken were soaked with spicy, black-pepper laced flavours of a delicious dry rub. It was complimented by the long, well-cooked grains of rice smothered in tangy-sweet sauces. We skipped the corn-on-the-cob and indulged in the side of perfectly boiled and refried Peruvian Beans.

Say aye to fries
We ended the meal with the Clásica Mutton Burger (Rs 180), which had a chunky, salt-brined mutton patty and tomato and cucumber slices packed between sponge soft buns. While the burger was satiating, the crisp Mucho Special Fries that accompanied the dish were our fave and ensured we left the place with a smile on our face. Isn't Peru all about potatoes, after all?
