Two-month extension for BlackBerry services

Research In Motion (RIM) may get a two-month deadline extension to find an effective solution to give Indian security agencies access to their corporate e-mail services.

The government has said it will ban some BlackBerry messaging services by August 31 unless RIM resolves concerns that the phones may be used for terrorist attacks or other illegal activities.

The Department of Telecommunications was likely to ask the government for an extension to resolve the issue, as RIM needed time to provide real time access to its corporate e-mails, a senior official said.

RIM, facing a possible ban on its BlackBerry service in India, offered to lead an industry forum in developing ways to balance the country's security needs with customers' privacy requirements.

RIM said yesterday it wants to find ways to address the government's requests, while making sure its customers' communications are secure.

"Finding the right balance to address both regulatory and commercial needs is an ongoing process and RIM has assured the Government of its continued support and respect for national security requirements," the company said in a statement.
